Euclid Happenings Jan. 25

So much goes on in the world headquarters of Euclid Records right here in Webster Groves, MO. We figured we'd start sharing our secrets with you, giving you guides to help in the endless scowering for great new and old music.

ITEM: They are tucked away in a couple nooks in the store, and you may have never noticed, but we've got one heck of a great selection of used books on various and sundry musical topics. And if you have noticed them, well, look again, because we just put out a few dozen recent acquisitions to tempt your eyeballs. Rock, country, blues, books (bios of Roy Orbison, Jerry Wexler, Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams, and more, not to mention lots of great genre overviews)and jazz books (we've got Bud Powell's bio, and dozens of great looks at jazz players and styles)are packed tight on the shelves. You will learn something, guaranteed.

ITEM: Everybody loves the band Wilco, and we are the exclusive St. Louis area store for great Wilco merchandise. In fact, we just got a couple of gorgeous new full-color Wilco posters, and our great assortment of beautiful and stylish Wilco t-shirts is about to be augmented with some new designs. Check back in the next week or two for that. And remember, Euclid Records is the place Jeff Tweedy worked back in the day. You never know what's gonna happen with our employees.

ITEM: We are swimming in amazing old 45 rpm records these days. Euclid Joe bought a huge collection recently, and we've been digging through pulling out the coolest old new wave and punk rock records to spice up our 45 bins at the front of the store. Oh, yeah, and incredible classic (and obscure) soul and rock'n'roll discs, too!

ITEM: Speaking of soul, if you're a fan of the golden age of that genre, from the late 1950s through the 1970s, you will be delighted to find the bins filling up with an abundance of used LPs. Our man Al is upstairs twice a week going through and cataloging hundreds of great records by the likes of the Dramatics, Dennis Coffey, Chairmen of the Board, and Earth, Wind & Fire, just to name the first few records in the new arrival section today.

ITEM: We've been beefing up our new LP reggae section lately. Classic Studio One releases, Lee Perry, Culture, John Holt, lots more. If there's one genre of music that feels absolutely right on vinyl, it's reggae, with that warm, deep bass and the sweet sounds of the vocals.

ITEM: The latest issue of MOJO magazine is here, with New Order on the cover and a free CD of contemporary artists covering New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies record. Articles on David Bowie, Ringo Starr, Tim Hardin, and Billy Corgan, not to mention all the comprehensive record reviews and more. Don't miss this one.

ITEM: Euclid Joe, the man who never sits still, is out on the road right now picking up what promises to be an exciting and very large collection of jazz, classical, and other interesting CDs, and a whole bunch of truly interesting DVDs. We'll have more info on this after it gets here and we start picking through it, but we are already salivating to see what kind of stuff we're going to add in the next few weeks.

Troubadour Dali to Play Free Residency Sunday Nights at Off Broadway

ST. LOUIS: Troubadour Dali is returning to Off Broadway for a four-week Sunday night free concert residency to demonstrate once again that they are one of the most exciting bands rocking in St. Louis. There’s no proof like a live show, with the psychedelic swirling guitars mixed with the psychedelic swirling visuals that make Troubadour Dali one of the must-see bands for all local fans of rock music. Better yet, they will be joined on the bills by several other great local outfits. Did we mention the concerts are free? Off Broadway is located at 3509 Lemp.

The residency begins Sunday, Jan. 8 at 9 pm, with opening act Ocean Rivals, a straight-ahead rock band. On Jan. 15, Troubadour Dali will be joined by the homespun Americana of Tenement Ruth and the full-throttle assault of Warm Jets USA. The Jan. 22 show will also feature the lo-fi joys of Frances With Wolves and the neo-psych sounds of Electric Garden. Finally, on Jan. 29, a full bill includes the one-man punk/blues act Red Mouth, the indescribably powerful Magic City, and the ever-evolving Rats and People Orchestra.

Troubadour Dali has released two full-length albums and a 7” single on the Euclid Records label. Their 2011 release, Let’s Make It Right, was one of the highlights of the year, a churning, burning celebration of the power of 12-string guitar and darkly incandescent melody. But, as has been the case since the release of their self-titled debut back in late 2009, the band’s live show has already moved past the sounds captured on recordings. The chance to play four weeks in a row in the same place is practically guaranteed to push Troubadour Dali to new heights of excellence.

Faves of 2011: Steve Pick

Our tallest employee, and long-time music writer and disc jockey, weighs in on his 20 favorite records released in 2011. The list is in alphabetical order, as he just can't make up his mind how to rank them otherwise.

Gregg Allman - Low Country Blues. He's been out there performing all along, but it had been years since he made a record under his own name. Teamed up with producer T-Bone Burnett and the whole crew of players that comes with that guy, Allman revisits the blues he loved when he was young, and shows that it's still primarily a vocal form, no matter how many talented guitar players you can surround yourself with all your life.

The Bangles - Sweetheart of the Sun. I love the hits as much as the next guy who lived through the 80s, but for me, the Bangles were always among the most exhilarating purveyors of 60s pop pleasures. I mean, come on, "Dover Beach" was my favorite single song of the entire decade back then. Anyway, this really is the second best album they've ever made, which is still impressive even when you consider there are only three that I like less than this one.

Steve Cropper - Dedicated. The guitarist for Booker T & the MG's and a thousand classic Stax/Volt singles has been content to stay in the background for the last 40 years, popping up with the Blues Brothers here, Neil Young there, and then with Felix Cavaliere of all people. But this record, a tribute to the Five Royales with guest vocalists like Sharon Jones, Bettye LaVette, B.B. King, Steve Winwood, and more, is an absolute delight. The songs deserve fresh exposure, because they are among the best 50s rock'n'roll numbers you've never heard.

Dengue Fever - Cannibal Courtship. Just your typical psychedelic alternative rock band with Cambodian pop music roots, I suppose, but the fun to be had listening to this album is anything but ordinary. Songs sung in a language I can't speak are aural bliss; songs sung in English are funny, and full of male-female interaction that actually sounds like real life. All this and you want to dance.

Ha Ha Tonka - Death of a Decade. First of all, there is "Problem Solver," which is the kind of furious, hook-filled rant that I've never failed to love, going back to my adolescent love for Mouth & McNeil's "How Do You Do." Then there's "Usual Suspects," which is almost as good. Then there is the singing, the harmonies, the guitar playing, the arrangements, the songwriting, the general inability to find anything they don't do well. They haven't yet done anything so brilliant you can't believe it exists, but they sound as much as any new band in recent years like they might get there one day.

Joe Henry - Reverie. In between producing half the records I love these days, Joe Henry continues to write tortured love songs, exotic observations, and generally intriguing material. Then he brings them to his band, which often includes Marc Ribot as just one item in an astonishingly effective assembly line. There's nothing that sounds like a Joe Henry record, and every time you play them, you hear something you'd previously missed. And, on this one, a lot of times there's a dog barking in the background because they recorded it live in his living room.

Sarah Jarosz - Follow Me Down. I never really got a chance to listen to her first album, but the cover of Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" pricked up my ears when I heard it on KDHX, and further investigation into the new one just kept bringing me more things to love. Folkie with a pop sensibility and an art-rock musical talent, Jarosz is as uncategorizable as the Punch Brothers (who turn up on at least one track here) and purt near as exciting.

k.d. lang & the Siss Boom Bang - Sing It Loud. There are singers in this world who cannot let me down no matter what they do, and k.d. lang is at the pinnacle of that list. I've loved her through her country kitsch, her country sobriety, her adult alternative, her dance-pop, her lounge, and every other period she's flitted through with her pipes that blare stronger than those of almost any singer. But she's not just about showing off that big voice - she's a singer's singer, a master of her instrument, and given a great song (the title track, or her transcendent take on the Talking Heads' "Heaven"), she will put you right inside a constantly changing space of pure beauty.

Amy LaVere - Stranger Me. I've been the one-man proselytizer for this record. Big giant hooks wedded to big giant emotions and an admittedly little bitty voice. But that small voice packs a punch, as she spits out the damn love song her man was asking her to write just before she dumped him, or coos the entrancing title track, or just proves that she's actually capable of covering Captain Beefheart without making anybody wince (which, I guess, means that little voice might have some power after all). It's not exactly Shoot Out the Lights, but it's worth noting the drummer is the guy she dumped.

Shelby Lynne - Revelation Road. I've liked some of Lynne's half-hearted records these past ten years, but ever since she proclaimed I Am Shelby Lynne over ten years ago, she hasn't exactly honed in on what makes that a statement of such pride. Until now. Playing all the instruments herself, she has to make sure her vocals carry the songs, because there aren't any fancy tricks behind her to distract us. And the songs, led by the uproarious (for her) title track and the complex examination of life's endings in "Heaven's Only Days Down the Road," are more than enough to work with.

Imelda May - Mayhem. Sometimes you just want to party with some in-your-face rockabilly-derived excitement. And sometimes you just want to hear an amazing singer with complete control of nuance, passion, and dynamics. Hey, right here, you get both. It's among the most fun listens I had this year, and yet it sticks to the ribs with strong songwriting and a performance of complete control.

Meshell Ndegeocello - Weather. She's been confounding expectations for almost twenty years now. Funky when you think she might be alternative rock, out-there jazzy when you feel she's going down the folky singer-songwriter road, and now completely uncategorizable, with all her musical elements merging into a personal, idiosyncratic, and entirely mesmerizing style. She covers Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel," and I heard it three times before a friend actually pointed out to me that's what she was singing. Her originals (written by her bandmates and herself in varying combinations) are subtle, engaging, and mysteriously sexual. And for further seasoning, she brings Joe Henry on board to produce, which means it sounds as good as records get.

Tracy Nelson - Victim of the Blues. Nelson can sing just about every style - country, rock, soul, etc. - but here she returns to the songs that inspired her when she started out back in the early 60s. It's blues, and considering she picks songs we've heard before from Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, and Ma Rainey, she makes everything sound as if it was just being discovered. Really, my pick for the album nobody else is raving about.

Willie Nile - The Innocent Ones. It's a Willie Nile album. Automatic consideration for any year-end list. It's possibly the third best Willie Nile album (after Streets of New York and Places I Have Never Been, but Beautiful Wreck of the World is right in the mix somewhere). Automatic consideration for falling in love. It's big, bright, giant guitar hooks, masses of vocal melodies, and yearning observations about life, love, and winners who deserve to be losers and vice versa. Why isn't this guy showing up on every year-end list?

Over the Rhine - The Long Surrender. I am not one of those types who have followed this duo through thick and mostly thin, as they attract a worshipful cult second only to the Bruce Cockburn clans in intensity and lack of perspective. But, dangit, this record won me over right away, with clarity of melody, with poetic condensation and openness in the lyrics, and with a completely organized ramshackle approach to sound masterminded, one presumes, by producer Joe Henry. I've liked some of their stuff before, but this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

Peter Bjorn & John - Gimme Some. Clearly, these guys are raking in some cash, as "Second Chance" provides the theme and bed music for the sitcom Two Broke Girls week after week. But despite the over-familiarity of the opening riff of this cut, Gimme Some is the kind of record that reveals new things to love every couple months when we spin it again at work. And "Lies" is the only recording I've heard in the last 25 years that could have been released on a 45 in 1977 and had me pogoing like a madman. These Swedes understand punk rock better than all the wannabes that have come along since the glory days. It's about aspiring to reach beyond your capacities, not limiting yourself to being like something else.

Rum Drum Ramblers - Mean Scene. I don't know enough about the street musicians of the early 30s who kind of played blues but also played other stuff (generally referred to as hokum whenever someone like Robert Johnson would record a song like "Red Hot" and confuse blues purists), but I know what I like. Whether this St. Louis combo is recreating something that happened before any of us were born, or whether they're updating it into something decidedly post-postmodern, I leave up to expert scholars. In the meantime, I'm gonna "Jump Into a Frenzy" whenever I hear a song as downright crazy rhythmic as "Jack & Tom" or "Get Behind the Wheel." Singer/guitarist Mat Wilson works himself up into a frenzy whether he's pumping up the electricity with Bob Reuter's Alley Ghost, or ploughing the acoustic fretboard in this context.

Paul Simon - So Beautiful or So What. This was my fave album this year long before I was lucky enough to see Simon lead a brilliant live band in concert at the Fox a couple months back. Smart as a whip, willing to cut himself in public with both wit and sheer audacity, Paul Simon puts the lie to any belief that creativity diminishes with age. I mean, I liked a lot of the stuff in between Graceland and this one. I'm on record as being the only music critic who really thought The Capeman was a great idea. But this one is like all the things you've loved about Simon, no matter which ones they were in his long and varied career, only sounding as if he'd just now come up with a way to distill these thoughts into musical vivacity.

Tom Waits - Bad As Me. Year-end lists are never particularly relevant to the way we listen to music. Arbitrary cut-off points mean that the records we played like crazy 11 months ago have to compete with the ones we can't stop listening to now. I have a very talented writer friend who has resisted writing these pieces out of a pathological fear that something she would love has not actually crossed her ears in a given year. And then, something like my own pathological insistence that I listen to everything in the order I receive it comes along. I've got this album, but it currently sits about ten or fifteen discs above what is getting my intense auditions, which means the albums I play in my car. Until then, I won't know for sure if it's as amazing as it sounds in the store, but because it sounds here like the best thing Waits has done since Frank's Wild Years (and I tried relistening to Mule Variations to see if that was better, but it wasn't), I'm putting it on this arbitrary list right now. Something about his reunion with the likes of Keith Richards and Marc Ribot makes this one sound much fresher than he has in a long time.

Abigail Washburn - City of Refuge. Some people embrace folk music because they want to revisit something they lost, or more often, never had in the first place. Then there's Abigail Washburn, who is a folkie only because the banjo was the instrument she figured out how to play, and traditional songs were the easiest ones with which to learn. Turns out they led her to write stuff that, while retaining an influence from bluegrass and turn-of-the-last-century rural styles, is entirely personal and wide-ranging and musically adventurous. Sure, I wish this album had a couple songs sung in Chinese, as the other ones do, but who needs ancient Mandarin when you've got so many new ideas?

Euclid Records is thrilled to get in on the ground floor and help introduce DeRobert and the Half-Truths to the soul and funk fans of St. Louis when they give a free performance in the store on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 pm. Hailing from Nashville, TN, this band is one of the most exciting new groups to come along in some time. Taking their cues from the soul and funk stylings of the late 60s and early 70s, they invest the music with clever and emotionally intense originality. DeRobert and the Half-Truths will also be appearing at 2720 Cherokee later that night.

With seven members, including a full 3-piece horn section, this band can produce a variety of different sonic approaches. The Nashville Scene says of DeRobert and the Half-Truths that their songs “feature buttery hooks that simmer in your skull like a funky, funky stew.” Dusty Groove America, one of the most respected mail-order houses for this type of music, says of their new EP, “Beg Me”: they’ve “shown enough potential thus far to make us think they'd eventually rise to the upper tier of neo classic funky soul collectives – and with this exceptional EP we think they've made it!”

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound to Perform Live at Euclid Records

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound will be returning to Euclid Records for another exhilarating performance on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 5 pm. When this highly entertaining soul band played in the store just over a year ago, Euclid Records was transformed into one happening dance area. That performance was recorded, and it led to the release a couple months back of the latest in the series of Euclid Sessions 7” singles, “Berry Please” backed with “What.”

Since 2007, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound have been one of the leading lights of the soul revival trend. Their two albums, Beat of Our Own Drum and the very recent Want More, are chock full of terrific songwriting and the intensely vibrant vocals of JC Brooks himself. Still, it is in live performance that this band truly shines. They have appeared a number of times in St. Louis over the last couple of years, always winning new converts to the cause of revved-up, high energy, raw and uncompromising music. JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound will also be appearing that same night at Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp.

Euclid Records is always happy to present live music on its stage. Musicians who have performed there have frequently complimented the room on its especially good sound. With a band as exciting as JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound returning to that stage, we can only expect the reputation of Euclid Records as a performance space to improve.

Cannonball & Coltrane Recorded and Signed in Chicago

Today we'll be posting 28 rare Jazz LP's for auction on eBay. The coolest and certainly the crown jewel of the auction is a mint stereo copy of Cannonball Adderley's "Cannonball in Chicago" signed by Cannonball and the other saxophonist on this classic, John Coltrane. Despite the fact that we've bought and sold one of the finest collections of signed Jazz records, collected by Raffe Simonian the noted Chicago autograph hound, this is only the third Coltrane signature we've ever come across. This record went through a few hands before getting to me. It was originally owned by a prominent Chicago DJ (sorry, I was never told which one) who sold his collection to a dealer in Chicago, who in turn sold some (including this) to a dealer here in St. Louis, who in turn sold it to me. Whew! Anyway, best guess on the origins of these signatures goes back to 1965 or 1966 and the Playboy Jazz Festival that took place in Chicago. Although Cannonball and Coltrane did not play together that day, they both were on the same bill with their respective groups. The other signed records in the collection seemed to come from the same time, so I think this is a pretty safe bet.

Anyway, this is a rather significant piece of Jazz memorabilia, with Coltrane autographs being so scarce. Even Raffe didn't have a Coltrane signature in his collection. Aside from all this, the record is marvelous, recorded in Chicago in 1959 while on tour with Miles Davis. Basically, this is the Miles Davis Sextet minus Miles. Backed by Miles' rhythm section Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb.

When Black Friday Comes

Perhaps you've heard there will be quite a few special releases coming out for this year's Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). Yep, in conjunction with the Record Store Day campaign, record labels are offering dozens of really cool limited edition titles, and we'll be getting quite a few of them here at Euclid Records.

Caveats: All these titles are very limited, and we don't always get everything we order ourselves. There will not be very many copies of any of these available. These will be sold on a first come first served basis on Friday morning, Nov. 25 beginning at 10 am. Buffalo Killers to Perform Exclusive Euclid Records Concert

Euclid Records will be hosting the only St. Louis appearance of the Cincinnati, Ohio rock band Buffalo Killers at 5 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Buffalo Killers will be on a Midwestern tour with the North Mississippi All-Stars, but there wasn’t a St. Louis date booked. With an open night between Chicago and Kansas City, the band called up Euclid Records (coincidentally at the very moment that store employees were listening to their latest album, “3”) and asked if they could do an in-store performance. Being no dummies, we immediately agreed to the idea. Euclid Records is located at 601 E. Lockwood in Webster Groves.

Buffalo Killers were formed in 2006 when brothers Andrew and Zachary Gabbard recruited their former bandmate in Thee Shams, Joseph Sebaali, to move away from the Rolling Stones-inspired garage rock and towards the Crazy Horse and James Gang stylings they play now. With Andrew on guitar and vocals, Zachary on bass and vocals, and Sebaali on drums, Buffalo Killers present an enticing stew of 70s rock that rolls and smokes on its own. They have released three albums: the debut, “Buffalo Killers,” the Dan Auerbach-produced “Let It Ride,” and the brand new “3.”

Between now and Nov. 9, Euclid Records will also be hosting in-store performances by Ume on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 5 pm, by St. Louis’s own Salt of the Earth on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 pm, and by Mike Doughty on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6 pm.

Salt of the Earth to Perform In-Store Oct. 29

Euclid Records is pleased to be participating along with over 40 other Webster Groves retail outlets, restaurants, and cultural institutions in the first Art on the Town event. As part of the day-long celebration of the arts throughout Webster, Euclid Records will be hosting a live performance by the St. Louis roots group Salt of the Earth from 2 to 3 pm on Saturday, Oct. 29. Euclid Records is located at 601 E. Lockwood.

Salt of the Earth formed in 2003 after vocalist/rhythm guitarist/songwriter Lynn Reif and bassist Mike Schrand had spent many years performing in the band Belle Starr. Along with Jake Brookman and Jim Hieger on a variety of stringed instruments, Reif and Schrand have developed quite an intriguing interplay in this group. Salt of the Earth has performed at many of the top venues in St. Louis, including a recent headlining show at the Sheldon. They have released three CDs, “Against the Muse,” “These New Days,” and “So Sing To Me.”

Art on the Town is an exciting event organized by the Webster Community Arts Foundation. It features outstanding live performances by classical, jazz, blues, folk, and gospel musicians, as well as artist demonstrations, dance and drama performances at over 40 locations in the Webster Groves area. Euclid Records will also be highlighting our collection of spectacular silk-screened concert posters, designed by leading artists around the country.

Later that same afternoon, Euclid Records will also feature an in-store performance by Mike Doughty at 6 pm.

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound Deliver Euclid Sessions 7"

It’s been almost a year, and people are still buzzing about the incredible live performance delivered last November by the great modern soul band JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound in Euclid Records. On Oct. 20, two of the songs recorded that afternoon will be released on a live 7” single as the latest from the Euclid Sessions series. The a-side is “Berry Please,” their scorching imagination of the way it was in Detroit back in the early 60s, when being noticed by Motown Records honcho Berry Gordy was the first step towards stardom. For the b-side, the band has chosen “Want,” a song they haven’t released anywhere else.

Since 2007, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound have been roaring out of Chicago, taking cues from both the soul records that so obviously inspired them and the aggression and invention of modern indie rock. Fronted by the human dynamo that is JC Brooks, the Uptown Sound deliver knock-out grooves emphasizing the rhythm aspect of r’n’b. Their first album, “Beat of Our Own Drum,” appeared in 2009, and featured the original recording of “Berry Please.” On Oct. 24, they will release their second album, “Want More,” on the Bloodshot Records label. It includes their blistering cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” originally released as the b-side of a 7” single last year.

This 12th release in the Euclid Sessions series is, like all the others, strictly limited to only 300 copies. Ume to Play Live at Euclid Records Oct. 27

Get ready for Euclid Records to get all loud and furious when Ume plays an in-store on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 5 pm. The Austin, TX band Ume (pronounced “ooo-may”) was the breakout group to play Loufest this past August, and they wanted to get back to our fair city as fast as possible. Ume’s music has been described as “beautifully dissonant” and “haunting but never gloomy.” We say they are just plenty cool.

Ume is a three-piece band fronted by singer/guitarist Lauren Larson, with her husband Eric Larson on bass, and Rachel Fuhrer on drums. They have released two full-length albums and an EP since their debut in 2005. Their latest album, “Phantoms,” just came out a few weeks ago to rave reviews. To quote the Austin American-Statesman: “What "Phantoms" does is take all that fury and lay it on wax with lots of moody atmospherics, keyboards and lyrical vulnerability that gets sacrificed in the abandon of the band's live shows.”

Ume will also be playing at the Firebird later that night.

Portrait Of A Dead Nightclub: Turners Hall

A virtual remembrance of the local music venues that today only exist in our collective memories

Turners Hall at 20th and Salisbury was another in a long line of random places that local promoter John Green scouted out and used for punk rock shows. While there are plenty of detractors of John Green I think it has to be said that without him the scene could very well have dried up for lack of viable venues. I of course use the word viable here loosely.

Turners Hall was what was left of the North St. Louis Turnverein, a German gymnastic society. It was run by a woman named Dorothy that ran a deli there as well on the first floor. I don’t know exactly how it came to be that John Green found this site. My guess is he was driving around in run down neighborhoods looking for another venue to use for shows. The room was on the second floor so hauling gear in and out was a total drag but since this was an old ballroom it had a nice big stage and dressing rooms on either side backstage. It sounds really classy, it wasn’t.

White Suburban Youth at Turners Hall

The first shows I remember there were Toxic Reasons, Necros and Circle Jerks. They were within weeks of one another in the fall of 1985. This would have been after the final fiasco with another girl’s bathroom at the Victory Center in October of 1985, which cost the scene another venue. After the start of 1986 there was a succession of shows at Turners with COC, St. Vitas, The Brood, DRI, Blast and The Boneless Ones. This was also the site of the first Dead Milkmen show in St. Louis before their big hit MTV song. I think they might have had twenty or so people at that show. In the first half of 1986 my first band White Suburban Youth opened several of these shows including the last WSY show with Naked Raygun in April of that year. Over the spring and summer of 1986 Turners had JFA, Descendents, Beefeater, MDC, Doggy Style and the last Black Flag tour. Ultraman pretty much played all of these shows too.

Dread Finks at Turners Hall

I guess the most memorable event was the giant brawl in the street after the Descendents show. Every show though had at least some level of violence with the locals that didn’t appreciate a bunch of freaks invading their neighborhood. Unlike the Bernard where you risked getting mugged for cash these kids would just jump people to beat the crap out of them and nothing else.

Turners finally came to an end in November of 1986 during the Raw Power/Dayglo Abortions show. After all the fights and problems I guess the cops had finally had it and shut the show down about four songs into Raw Powers set. So it lasted just about year, which in punk rock time was pretty long.

Mike Doughty to Appear Live at Euclid Records Oct. 29

Mike Doughty, who has spent the better part of 20 years winning fans to his constantly evolving but always engaging brand of rock, will perform a free concert at 6 pm, Saturday, Oct. 29 at Euclid Records. Doughty will be appearing later that evening at the Old Rock House. He will be accompanied for the in-store by cellist Andrew “Scrap” Livingston, from his band, so we can expect a more intimate and more unusual performance from Doughty. Euclid Records is located at 601 E. Lockwood in Webster Groves, MO, 63119.

Doughty was the frontman of Soul Coughing, a band that gained visibility in the 90s as part of the alternative rock explosion of that decade, but which never really sounded like part of the trend. With an eclectic batch of influences ranging from pop to hip-hop to electronic music, Soul Coughing couldn’t break through in a big way, and eventually broke up in 2000. From that point on, Doughty has released half a dozen albums and established a niche among fans of intelligent, catchy, and slightly unpredictable independent rock. His latest album, “Yes and Also Yes,” has been among Euclid Record’s best sellers since its release Aug. 30.

This will be the latest in the Euclid Sessions series of live recordings at Euclid Records to be followed by the release of a 45-rpm limited edition single from the performance. Each release will be strictly limited to 300 copies, and $1 for each one pressed will be donated to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund (NOMRF) to benefit musicians displaced or suffering loss of equipment in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

All the Euclid Sessions 45s are released in exquisite packaging with the back sleeve designed by Firecracker Press, a terrific graphic and letterpress printshop here in St. Louis. The front covers are unique 7 x 7" prints, signed and numbered by various graphic artists such as Gary Houston, Guy Burwell, and more, suitable for framing or keeping as a front cover to each single.

One of the most fascinating interviews we've ever read with any musician, and it's even better because it's with Nick Lowe.

We're not sure how long this will be up on NPR, but here's your first listen to the new David Murray Cuban Ensemble tribute to Nat King Cole en Espanol.

You gotta love a good curmudgeonly complaint piece, especially when it's from DJ Shadow, a long-time fave of some of us around here. However, we seem to recall the DJ spent some time shopping in Euclid Records once, and that means there's at least one record store that does what he would like, selling old records and new stuff side by side.

One of our favorite St. Louis bands, the Blind Eyes, has just added a second guitarist. Cool.

Euclid Records Storewide Sale, Gazebo-A-Go-Go, and Great Performances

Euclid Records is gearing up for a big celebratory weekend. This Saturday, Oct. 1 is the store’s annual Sidewalk and Storewide Sale, with everything inside the store 10% off the everyday price, and a ton of exciting LPs and CDs piled everywhere outside at incredibly low prices. One of the places he explores is our own Euclid Records down in the Bywater region of that great city. We’re honored to be considered a part of the rich heritage of New Orleans.

We were as surprised as the rest of you when R.E.M. suddenly announced last week they were calling it a day. But Mike Mills has some interesting things to say about how they reached the decision.

We just found it a wonderful coincidence that as we were listening to an old Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire record in the store, this video suddenly popped up on the computer screen of Bird playing live just a few days ago.

We suggest you set your DVRs if you like George Harrison; this should be on HBO next Wednesday night.

Hysterical is the third record by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, one of the best bands to come out of 2005. Back then this band did something completely unheard of at the time, but now seems pretty commonplace. Their fame sprouted directly from internet buzz, as opposed to being signed to a label. They even appeared on Conan O’Brien, and eventually got the attention of the Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA), who offered to distribute the record to a wider audience. That record was spastic, fun, fresh, and we couldn’t keep it in stock.

As soon as I turned on Hysterical and the drums kicked in, I was immediately transported back to the summer I first heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. While this record may not have the same kick their debut had, I’m very pleased with the whole thing. It has a nice mix between their sound on the first and second record, that one being much more mellow and dark. Songs like “Maniac” & "Ketamine and Ecstasy" will make you want to dance, and "Misspent Youth" is sweeter than anything this band has ever written. The spaced out guitar on "Into Your Alien Arms" is one of the best moments of this album. Alec Ounsworth still has his strange and wonderful way of singing, which has always gather comparisons to Talking Heads-era David Byrne. Overall, it's a very well rounded and great sounding album.

I highly recommend this album for fans of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, as well as those who are new to the band and might find this record much more accessible than previous efforts. Check out the video for "Maniac" below:

Wilco Listening Party & Contest

Sleepy Kitty Testimonial

When I walked into the Pageant to see the Dresden Dolls last year there was a mighty rock noise going on stage that grabbed me obliquely and instantly; a loping groove full of confused sounds of varied and interesting kinds.

As I sought to orient myself in the crowd, some words came floating off the stage, sung by the blonde girl standing with a guitar behind some keyboards. "She was just seventeen..." and it made me smile. A Beatles reference, a nod to the pop of the last century, sung in a different tempo, a different tune. Before I even found myself a seat or a friend, I was caught up in Sleepy Kitty's deconstruction of a great pop song, startled and captivated by their seriously twisted rendition, and by all the noise they were making with just two people, especially since one of them was busy playing the drums.

They played a few more songs, all of them really good, and the vocals came across as on key and dynamic. When they finished their set I was a fan. I liked their facebook page and promised myself I'd go see them play again as soon as the opportunity presented itself. Anyone who knows me will guess that I never made it out to see them again; I hardly ever go out, since my home life is almost irresistibly heavenly, and my social set largely absent from the scene unless one of our own is playing. It's lonely to be out watching music by yourself, no matter how much you like it.

When I was busy making an ass of myself mistaking Jason Hutton for Jason MacEntire, which had the unintended effect of kind of booking myself into two different studios at the same time while thinking I was booking in one, I heard that Jason Hutto was recording a CD for Sleepy Kitty, which made me hopeful for something good. Meanwhile I was busy with my own recording. When the CD came out, I was traveling so heavily and working round the clock on multiple projects and couldn't get over to Euclid records to buy myself one. I finally got my chance the other day, and was excited enough to throw it in the CD player in my car on the way home

To simply state that it exceeded my expectations is the kind of restraint that is far from my style, but I tried to control myself anyway. After less than two minutes of the first song, "Gimme A Chantz!", I was trying desperately to calm myself down long enough to get the word masterpiece out of my head, but it kept coming back, and keeps coming back every time I've heard in the three or four days I've been listening to it. If someone wanted to design a pop song just for me, that has every element I most ardently desire in a pop song, this one comes very close. Long melody lines, pop beats, clever instrumentation, heart-stopping voice trilling thrilling harmonies, clever words (but not too clever, one of my bemoaned vices), and enough changes to amaze and delight me to a point approaching astonishment and deep delight. And in under 4 minutes.

Not every song on the disc is change music, my favorite kind of music, but nothing seems like random crap either. They put a lot into each song, some of them almost as sublime as "Gimme A Chantz!" Overall the effect is something like Bettie Serveert, but younger and hipper, and with a continuing joyous love of incorporating random and select pieces of musical culture at odd moments - "Meet me in St. Louie, Louie" in "Ridin' With St. Louis Tonight," a Gershwin quote from American In Paris in the wall of guitar ballsy "Speaking Politely," and a few other gems tucked here and there, with the hope that there are more too obscure for me to notice.

I'm hoping against hope that this CD, which has charmed me completely so incredibly quickly, becomes one of my favorite local releases ever, as it seems to be right now.

First up is the review from regular customer Daniel Durchholz of the Glen Campbell concert the other night, and another one from our customer Roy Kasten. These made us realize what a treasure we are losing as Campbell faces his disease with a farewell tour.

The St. Louis music community took a major hit this week with the passing of Rondo Leewright, lead singer for years of various line-ups known as Rondo's Blues Deluxe.

Buddy Holly would have turned 75 this past Wednesday. Here's a great video showing just how different the world was back when he was around.

Jazz and blues fans (and music fans in general) should head down to Webster Groves next Saturday, Sept. 17 for the 11th Annual Jazz & Blues Festival. There's a great line-up of live music, food, drink, face-painting, and lots more fun. And it's all just a few blocks down the road from your fave record store, so you can pick up some music to take home on the same trip.

Euclid Records Presents Gazebo A-Go-Go Oct. 1

Euclid Records is ready to kick off the Fall weather with a full day of musical excitement, food, drink, crafts, art, and a store-wide sale on Saturday Oct. 1. With five great St. Louis bands and presentations by music video collector Spike Priggen, all held at the Webster Groves Gazebo in Old Orchard, the first ever Gazebo A-Go-Go will be chock full of fun for everybody. Crafters and artists are invited to showcase their wares alongside the music. Food, beer, and wine will be for sale. Meanwhile, down the block at the Euclid Records store, 601 E. Lockwood, the annual sidewalk sale will present tons of hitherto unseen vinyl and CDs priced to move, and everything inside the store will be 10% off. Euclid Records is open from 10 am until 9 pm on Saturdays.

The music will kick off at 1 pm with the St. Louis heavy metal band Black Fast who knocked everybody out with an instore on Record Store Day in April. Next up, at 2:30 pm will be St. Louis pop rockers the Incurables, followed by the second ever reunion performance of the legendary 80s local band the Painkillers at 4:00, the fabulously noisy pop artists Sleepy Kitty at 5:30, and the shoegazing psychedelia of Troubadour Dali at 7:00. Euclid Records has released albums by the Painkillers, Sleepy Kitty, and Troubadour Dali this year.

Spike Priggen is the curator of the Bedazzled.tv and scopitones.com video blogs, and he will present two hours of rare seen music video clips from his collection, starting at 8:30 pm. First up is a program of “Scopitones,” the almost forgotten precursor to the modern music video, shot on 16mm film and shown on an early type of “Video Juke-Box.” Scopitone machines were usually located in bars and lounges, allowing for a slightly more “risqué” feel than one could see on TV or movies at that time. The 2nd hour of the program will feature newly unearthed footage originally broadcast on French TV, including early live footage of bands such as the Kinks, the Who, the Yardbirds, Them, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Otis Redding, the Moody Blues, the Pretty Things, and the Spencer Davis Group, as well as much, much more.

Artists and crafters who wish to rent space for the day should contact Joe at Euclid Records (314-961-8978 or joe@euclidrecords.com). Space will be $50.00, and sellers must provide their own tables. A limited amount of tents should be available. The portion of Lockwood next to the Gazebo should be blocked for the entire day.

We're not just the repositor of one of the keenest selections of new and used LPs and CDs you can find this side of the moon, but we have released three CDs and an assortment of live 7-inch vinyl singles (and one ten-inch EP. Sleepy Kitty's new album, Infinity City has been tearing up our charts, and it's coming out on LP just as soon as we can get some from the pressing plant. The Painkillers, St. Louis favorites back in the 80s, finally get the CD package they've long deserved. Troubadour Dali kicked off our CD releases almost two years ago, and their second album will be in the store in just a couple weeks.

Centro-Matic To Perform at Euclid - 5:00 July 5

Euclid Records is pleased to announce a special live acoustic performance by Centro-Matic beginning at 5 pm on Tuesday, July 5. Centro-Matic, a four-piece band together for fifteen years with the same line-up, is touring in support of “Candidate Waltz,” their first new album since 2008. “We’re aware that we’re not reinventing the wheel here, but it created some new parameters and terrain for us,” singer/songwriter Will Johnson recently said of the record in an online interview. Expect a mixture of new songs and old classics performed without their characteristic electric sound. That sound will be available later the same night as Centro-Matic will also be playing at Off Broadway.

Centro-Matic is led by Johnson, who came up with the concept back in 1996, and then managed to assemble a band which has stayed together ever since. Drummer Matt Pence, cellist/violinist Scott Danbom, and bassist Mark Hedman have shared the job of interpreting Johnson’s songs over the course of at least eleven Centro-Matic albums. But, that’s not all. The same line-up also records together as South San Gabriel whenever the songs seem to require a lower-key approach.

Johnson has also participated in the high-profile Monsters of Folk super-group with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, M. Ward of She & Him, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket during 2009 and 2010. In addition, he has released solo albums over the years, and is a prolific and intriguing painter.

Memphis Soul Legends the Bo-Keys to Perform at Euclid Records July 15

The wah-wah guitarist who played the intro on Issac Hayes’ “The Theme From Shaft.” The drummer on “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. The trumpet player on “Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding. When the Bo-Keys take the stage at 3 pm July 15 at Euclid Records, there is some serious musical history working. This band doesn’t just update the legacy of Memphis soul music from the 1960s and 1970s; it embodies it.

The band is a mixture of Memphis veterans and younger players who learned from the records of the older members of the band. The Bo-Keys were put together carefully by bassist Scott Bomar. His first recruit was the legendary guitarist Charles “Skip” Pitts, best known as the player on “Shaft,” but also heard on such hits as “It’s Your Thing” by the Isley Brothers and “Do the Funky Chicken” by Rufus Thomas. Drummer Howard Grimes was the force behind the Hi Rhythm Section of the 70s which backed Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Syl Johnson. Keyboardist Archie “Hubie” Turner was in the Hi Rhythm Section as well. Trumpeter Ben Cauler was an original member of the Bar-Kays, and the only survivor of the plane crash which took the lives of his bandmates and Otis Redding in 1967; he has played on records by Keith Richards, Isaac Hayes, Millie Jackson, the Doobie Brothers, and many more.

The Bo-Keys will release a new album, “Got To Get Back,” on June 21, but they’ve been recording steadily for most of the last decade. They have played numerous sessions for the likes of DJ Shadow, Al Green, and indie-rocker Jay Reatard, as well as worked on quite a few films, including “Black Snake Moan,” “Soul Men,” and “Hustle & Flow.” These versatile musicians can provide the backing for whatever situation is desired, though their hearts remain in the classic sound of soul.

The rest of the horn section includes Marc Franklin on trumpet, Derrick Williams and Jim Spake on tenor sax, and Kirk Smothers on baritone sax. These guys play exactly the way they need to play in order to fit in with the masters of the rest of the band. Those who saw the Bo-Keys at the Beat ‘n’ Soul festival last Fall at Off Broadway still speak in hushed tones of their majestic performance.
