JOHN NIEMAN, AUTHOR OF BOOK ON KSHE, TO DO SIGNING AT EUCLID RECORDS JUNE16

Euclid Records is pleased to welcome John Nieman, the author of In Concert: KSHE and 40 Years of Rock in St. Louis, to the store for a book signing on Sat, June 16, from 2-4 pm. Nieman’s book has been hailed as “a jaw-dropping collection of photos, ads, and memorabilia” by the Riverfront Times. It has also been called “the perfect gift for the St. Louis rock-music lover who has everything” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

John Neiman grew up in Collinsville, Ill. In 1976, he attended Superjam, his first rock concert. That year he began listening to KSHE. Over the next several years, he started frequenting shows at Kiel Auditorium and The Checkerdome. By 1979, John had started waiting all night at Peaches and Co-Op Records to score good seats. That year, he also began to photograph shows and took a number of front-row shots of bands that were at the peak of their success, including Van Halen, Sammy Hagar and Bob Seger. In 1983, he recorded Ruth Hutchinson and the Klassics show for a year. He also enlisted in the Air Force and took those KSHE tapes along to his first assignment in Florida. At Eglin Air Force Base, he occasionally played the tapes to his co-workers, who didn't quite understand the concept of an 89-year-old lady playing rock.

The book contains images of KSHE’s earliest broadcasts from the basement of station founder Ed Ceries' home and tells how the station affected a small but loyal following after it turned to rock in 1967. There are stories from those who were there, including Richard Palmese, (whose on air name was Brother Love), Ron Elz (Johnny B. Goode) and family and friends of the late Ron Lipe (Prince Knight), the late Bob Skaggs (Big Jack Davis) and the late Lee Coffee (The Musical Pumpkin).

The book takes you backstage with Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and The Grateful Dead. You will witness The Who from the front row, opening up for Herman's Hermits at the Kiel Opera House in 1967, The Doors at Kiel Auditorium in 1968, as well as Pink Floyd at Kiel Auditorium and Led Zeppelin at The Arena, both in 1973. You will have an on-stage perspective of a riot that unfolded at Kiel Auditorium at a Ten Years After concert in 1971 from the KSHE DJ who was the emcee that night. In Concert covers every major event KSHE has been a part of, including interviews of those who were a part of KSHE’s 1974 and 1975 Kite Flys along with onstage photography to bring those stories alive.
It has been requested by the curator staff at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is in the library at the museum.

Ha Ha Tonka to Play In-Store Friday, June 8

Euclid Records is thrilled to announce that Ha Ha Tonka, one of the most exciting independent rock bands of the last few years, will be making a free in-store performance on Friday, June 8, at 5 pm. Over the last five years, Ha Ha Tonka have received as much in-store play as almost any band we can think of, and it has long been a dream to have them perform live on our stage. Ha Ha Tonka is in town to headline later that night at the Duck Room in Blueberry Hill as part of the 16th annual Twangfest. Euclid Records has been a proud sponsor of Twangfest since the beginning.

Named after the popular Ha Ha Tonka State Park in southwest Missouri, the band Ha Ha Tonka has built a consistently growing following since signing to the Bloodshot Records label in 2007. Their three albums – Buckle in the Bible Belt, Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South, and Death of a Decade – are filled to the brim with melodic imagination, rich two, three, and four-part vocal harmonies, and lyrics of richness and vivid imagery.
