Updated list of Record Store Day Limited Edition Titles

We're focusing most of our attention these days on prepping for Record Store Day (April 21, of course), and we've added some titles to our list of stuff we've ordered. First, we'll give you the additions, then we'll show you the updated full list. There is also a Flaming Lips title which is listed as being extremely tentative; if the record is actually finished in time, then it will be shipped to stores for Record Store Day, but nobody is saying yet whether or not this will happen. Euclid Happenings Mar. 21

ITEM: Well, we made the big announcement yesterday. The first list of Record Store Day releases is up online. Just in case you haven't heard of Record Store Day, it's an annual celebration of the places around the country where music lovers have gathered for years to learn about new music, to meet their fellow fans, to browse through physical objects containing all that magic, and to simply connect with the spirit of the music that makes them happy. Record companies have gotten into the habit of releasing all sorts of special titles in limited runs made available only at select independent stores such as Euclid Records. These titles are sold on a first come first served basis, limit one copy per person so that everybody has a fair chance to pick up their favorites. The national Record Store Day is Saturday, Apr. 21, and that's the day we'll have these titles on sale, but we'll be celebrating all weekend long with live music, food, drink, and a storewide sale.

ITEM: One of the limited edition titles available for Record Store Day will be on our own Euclid Records label. It's a 7" single recorded live in our New Orleans store last year by the Baseball Project. The Baseball Project consists of Steve Wynn (formerly of the Dream Syndicate, and a long-time critically acclaimed solo artist), Scott McCaughey (formerly of the Young Fresh Fellows and now of the Minus 5), Linda Pitmon (Wynn's drummer in his current band), and normally Peter Buck (of a now-disbanded group called R.E.M.). Buck couldn't make the tour last year, but he was ably replaced by Mike Mills, his R.E.M. mate. The songs on this single are "El Hombre," about a certain former St. Louis Cardinal player, and an updated version of "Harvey Haddix," a celebration of perfect game pitchers in the major leagues. The cover is an absolutely gorgeous lenticular design by artist Amelie Mancini.

ITEM: We've been buying a lot of great used DVDs and Blu-Ray discs lately. There's no need to pay those high new prices when you can pick up some of your favorite movies and TV shows for less than half of list price. Come on in and browse. There's no way you won't find something that interests you.

ITEM: Wednesday night right here in St. Louis, the Bo-Keys, one of the finest soul bands in the country, will be playing down at Lola, 500 North 14th Street. We had the Bo-Keys play live in our store last year, and they are the absolute real deal, especially as the band includes legendary drummer Howard Grimes, who played on the Al Green classic records in the 70s, and guitarist Skip Pitts, who among many other accomplishments created the famous wah-wah guitar intro to the "Theme From Shaft." We'll have a Euclid Sessions 45 out on these guys before the year is over, we promise.

ITEM: Speaking of live music, tomorrow night at Off Broadway, Chuck Prophet will be performing. Prophet's new album Temple Beautiful is a fave of several Euclid staffers this year. The opening act, the Jans Project, includes our own mail order guru Steve Scariano on bass. We recommend both bands highly.

Up-to-the-minute List of Record Store Day Releases

We guarantee you that with one full month to go, there will be some additions and probably a subtraction or two on this list, but this is what we have ordered already. As we have done in the past, Record Store Day limited edition releases will be sold on a first come first served basis beginning when we open on Saturday, Apr. 21. We will not hold them in advance.

Euclid Happenings Mar. 7

ITEM: Record Store Day continues to build excitement as the list of limite
d edition special releases is trickling out in dribs and drabs. The official list isn't up yet, but Consequence of Sound has a pretty good round-up for you. Don't forget we'll be celebrating Record Store Day all weekend long, from Apr. 20-22, with live music, storewide sale, djs, food, drink, and lots more fun.

ITEM: We are so gosh darn chuffed with the new shelving units our man Rob built to hold all the used jazz CDs we've acquired of late. They are attractive and useful, too. So now all the used jazz from A to Z and even the various artists at the end are sitting there in one area for your perusal. You'll find titles we haven't had in years, as well as all the great classics from Blue Note, Columbia, Concord, Fantasy, Milestone, and other labels. There's never been a better time to check out our jazz section than right now. We'll be expanding the jazz vocals any day now, too!

ITEM: Congratulations to St. Louisian Justin Kinkel-Schuster (formerly of Theodore), who has a brand-new record out on the Misra label, distributed by Bloodshot. His new band is called Water Liars, and the album is called Phantom Limb, though it was originally supposed to be the band called Phantom Limb. Confusing, of course, but the music isn't. You can check out a track and read some nice words about them here.

ITEM: Speaking of checking out tracks, we switched out the listening stations last week, and there are a lot of cool new things to sample. How about Lambchop, Chuck Mead, Andrew Bird, Bowerbirds, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sinead O'Connor, and Moe., just for a few examples? Just walk in the door, turn right, and stop in front of the window for your chance to put headphones on and try it before you buy it.
