The Biggest A-Holes in Jazz

by Joe Schwab

Keith Jarrett (renowned A-hole) picks on the audience at the Umbria Jazz Festival for taking his picture.

I would be remiss if I didn't also include A-hole hall of famer, Mr. Buddy Rich.

You could probably throw Miles and Mingus in there too...

In 1972 Keith Jarrett played at the University of Tulsa. The geniuses in charge realized that the nice piano needed tuning, so they had it done. Then the piano was hauled up several flights of stairs to the Great Hall at Westby Center. Pretty smart, huh?
The next day the place was packed. Jarrett walked out and informed the audience that the piano was WAY out of tune (no surprise) so he would tune it, which he proceded to do by ear. His tuning was pretty damn entertaining! Then he left for a few minutes, came back and played the most amazing piano concert I've ever heard-and I've heard a lot. He was polite and friendly throughout his visit, but declined to play an encore.
